 Usson is 3 minutes away and can be seen from our house. Visit Romanesque churches including the Abbatiale in Issoire and the recently restored church at St-Nectaire.

 

 Explore the many colourful markets and sample delicious local produce particularly the famous local cheeses (Bleu d'Auvergne, Fournols, St Nectaire, Cantal, Salers, Fourme d'Ambert) and visit local wine producers to taste excellent little known local wines.

A region crammed with delights !

   The region enjoys a host of excellent restaurants including the Queen Margot at Usson where George and Sophie provide mouth watering Auvergne specialities, which can be savoured whilst taking in breathtaking rooftop views across the region of mountains, lakes and volcanoes. There is also a Michelin Star restaurant at Les Bergeres, Sarpoil, 15 minutes from the house.


   This volcanic region lends itself to natural thermal waters. The temperature of the thermal water in the valley of the Bes at Chaudes-Aigues is 82 degrees centigrade. These natural waters are reputed to be the hottest in Europe. Swimming and canoeing are allowed in this natural setting. Alternatively, there are spa centres throughout the region. The "eaux chaude" is used in the treatment for arthritis , rheumatism , gout and many other conditions.

Beautiful castles, lakes and mountains to admire !

   The medieval chateau of Murol (en route to the ski slopes at Super Besse and Mont-Dore), is 45 minutes from the house and is in close proximity to Lake Chambon with its beach, small pool, pedaloes, canoes, quad bikes and a beautiful sheltered lakeside walk.

   The chateau was a significant stronghold in the region and is brought to life further in the summer months with re-enactments of medieval tournaments. Bastille Day is the 14th of July, and provides spectacular firework displays from the castle. Alternatively from the comfort of Puy- Gros a distant multiple impressive firework display can be enjoyed from the surrounding villages. Take a glass of local wine from your bar and a dip in the illuminated Jacuzzi to complete this fest.
